Her stage productions include: Get You Some Business, Don’t Turn Your Back on God, and Can’t You Hear Them Crying and Abundant Rain. To date, Vanessa has written the Rain Series and the Storm Series. The books in the Rain Series are: Former Rain , Abundant Rain, and Latter Rain. The books in the Storm Series are: Rain Storm and Through The Storm . These books have received rave reviews, winning Best Christian Fiction Awards and topping numerous Bestseller’s lists.

Yesterday’s Promise is the first book of a series entitled, Second Chance of Love. Whitaker House plans to release the next two books in October 2010 and January 2011. Visit her online at www.VanessaMiller.com.

Vanessa, tell us about yourself.

Let’s see… I have one daughter (Erin), and I now have a two year old granddaughter and a 1 year old grandson. I know, I know… everyone tells me I don’t look old enough to be a grandmother. I just wish it was true.

Anyway, I am the administrator for the children’s Bible study program at my church and I am a full-time writer. I love to read and spend time with my family.

What type of jobs or careers have you worked in the past?

I have worked in accounting and in human resources. I liked different things about both areas, however, as the years progressed I discovered that I no longer wanted to work in corporate America. I prefer writing and working from home. So, I hope my readers continue to buy my books so I can keep this career. J

Who are your favorite authors? What are your favorite books?

I love everything by Jacquelin Thomas, Francine Rivers and Karen Kingsbury. I also love Kendra Norman-Bellamy, Tia McCollors, Michelle Stimpson and Norma Jarrett novels.  I travel with the last four authors mentioned in a group called The Anointed Authors on Tour and I make sure to read every novel they write.

My favorite novel however, is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.

When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?

I was about nine years old when I realized I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t have the first clue as to how I would accomplish this goal, but I knew that I loved the written word and I loved writing my own stories. After many years of trial and error I finally figured it out.

Tell us about your journey to publication.

As a teenager, I wrote poems and short stories. However, in my early twenties I attempted my first novel. I got halfway through and couldn’t finish it. The same thing occurred with the next three novels I attempted. The first novel I completed was Former Rain and it took seven years from the start of that book until it was published.

I was so excited about finally completing a novel that I didn’t want to wait on a publisher to agree to publish my novel. So I self-published it in 2003. By 2006, I signed a contract with a mainstream publisher. That deal provided me with better distribution. Now, in 2010, I have 4 new books releasing by three different publishers. The one thing I’ve learned through this journey is that God is good. He will never fail us, if we put our trust in Him.

Are you a full-time writer? If so, describe your day?

Yes, I’ve been writing full-time since 2005. My day goes something like this: Since I don’t have to drive into work. I eat breakfast and then I read my Bible and have prayer time (some days, I allow things to get in the way of my prayer time, those are typically not good days for me). I am usually at my desk about 9 am. I answer my emails for about an hour and then I write from about 10 in the morning until about 4 pm. I then use the rest of my day to work on marketing issues.

About the Book

Melinda Johnson has always felt called to ministry. So, when her father, Bishop Langston Johnson, decides to step down after thirty years of leadership at Omega Christian Center, it seems only natural for her to take his place. But Bishop Johnson feels led by a God who has other things in mind, and to succeed him, he appoints Steven Marks-a man who is opposed to female pastors, not to mention the fact that he is Melinda’s ex-fiancé.

Feeling defeated, Melinda nevertheless maintains her position as the church’s Missions and Community Outreach Director. Frequent interaction with the new bishop incites bitter sparring-and rekindles long-suppressed attraction, which grows only stronger when Melinda develops a relationship with Steven’s precious daughter, Brianna, who’s still struggling with the death of her mother.

Can Steven and Melinda set aside past pains, forgive each other, and learn to love again? Or will their opposing positions regarding women preachers keep them forever at odds?

Meet Vanessa Miller, author of Forsaken

Vanessa Miller

Vanessa Miller of Dayton , Ohio is an Essence best-selling author, playwright, Vanessa Millerand motivational speaker. Her stage productions include: Get You Some Business, Don’t Turn Your Back on God, and Can’t You Hear Them Crying and Abundant Rain.

To date, Vanessa has written the Rain Series and the Storm Series. The books in the Rain Series are: Former Rain, Abundant Rain, and Latter Rain. The books in the Storm Series are: Rain Storm and Through The Storm. These books have received rave reviews, winning Best Christian Fiction Awards and topping numerous Bestseller’s lists.

FORSAKEN is Vanessa’s newest book, due out in October 2009.  Forsaken is the story of a fallen pastor’s journey back to God. Vanessa believes that each of her books will touch readers across the country in a special way. It is, after all her God-given destiny to write novels that bring deliverance to God’s people.

Vanessa, tell us about yourself.

I’m an author and a playwright. I have one child, who is grown with two children of her own. I love spending time with my grandbabies. They have brought so much joy into my life.

My books have won awards and been on numerous bestseller list, such as the Essence Bestseller list.

What type of jobs or careers have you worked in the past?

Before leaving Corporate America to write full-time I was a Human Relations Professional. At times I really enjoyed this job, but there were other times when I couldn’t wait to quit.

When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?

I was about eight or nine when I realized I loved writing. I didn’t understand what that meant at that time, I just knew I loved to create stories.

Are you a full-time writer? If so, describe your day?

Yes, I am. I treat my writing just like a job that I would go to outside the home. I begin my work day at about nine in the morning. I write until about 4pm. But because I work from home it’s harder to turn work off than if I worked somewhere else. So I usually check emails and work on marketing ideas in the evening.

I also spend a lot of my day telling my family that I can’t talk because I’m working. So get use to it, future writers. Your family will never believe that your at work when your office is at home.

How do you balance your writing time and family time?

Somehow I find away to juggle it all in together. I’m not sure if I do the best balance act or not. I just make myself turn off the computer and spend time with my family.

FORSAKEN by Vanessa MillerABOUT THE BOOK

Pastor Jerome Tyler “JT” Thomas is charismatic behind the pulpit, charming to all he comes in contact with, and lethal to those who linger too long. Since the age of twenty-two, when he prayed for God to keep him out of prison, JT knew he would preach the gospel. Bishop Turner makes it possible; but there are strings attached, and now JT isn’t sure he can stay tied down.

Cutting loose causes more problems than JT anticipated. When an old friend from his days on the streets resurfaces and his extracurricular activity comes knocking on his front door, JT’s life and the lives of those close to him spiral out of control. Now he will need divine intervention to make things right. But how much help can a man hope to receive when he feels he’s been forsaken by God?

TIA MCCOLLORS: The Last Woman Standing (August 1, 2009), A Heart of Devotion, Zora’s Cry

DR. VIVI MONROE CONGRESS: The Bankrupt Spirit (2004), Manna For Mamma (2007)

Which book did you find the hardest to birth?

KENDRA NORMAN-BELLAMY: None of them were hard, exactly. I would say that In Greene Pastures was the most challenging because it was my first attempt at writing a book that had a strong flavor of mystery. It was the first of a series of romantic suspense novels. This was something different for me so it took a little more effort on my part. After writing that one, the others in the series were less of a challenge.

TIA MCCOLLORS: I think my first novel, A Heart of Devotion, was the most intimidating. With your first manuscript, it’s almost like you need an extra boost of confidence to prove that you can actually complete an entire novel. After you’ve written one, the others come easier.

DR. VIVI MONROE CONGRESS: They’re ALL my babies :-)

How would you describe your writing style?

KENDRA NORMAN-BELLAMY: If there is a politically correct word to accurately describe my style, I don’t know what that word is. I know that I am what the industry defines as a “seat of the pants” writer. I don’t prepare chapter outlines prior to delving into my story. I simply sit at my computer and type out my thoughts as they flow through my head. Rarely is anything pre-planned. I suppose my style of writing is a bit unique in that the lead character in all of my titles is a male. Most writers (both male and female) make a female character the lead in their stories, but that’s particularly true for the majority of female writers. I chose to build my stories around a male lead so that I can shed some light on the fact that we really do have strong, positive men in the African American community.

Contrary to what society may want us to believe, all of our black men are not on drugs, in jail, deadbeat dads, or mentally and/or physically abusive individuals. Many of them are dedicated fathers, loyal husbands, good providers, and God-fearing men. They aren’t perfect individuals by any means, but they are trying to be the best person they can be despite their faults and failures. Those are the men I choose to write about.

TIA MCCOLLORS: I tend to write books that touch the hearts of women. They’re light-hearted, but they can still make you think because they’re doused with so much reality – not from my life – but from the lives of any woman you see walking down the street. I also tend to think I have a good sense of humor so there’s always a funny scene or two in my books…or at least something that a character will say that’s going to make the reader laugh out loud.

DR. VIVI MONROE CONGRESS: Inspirational.

Do you listen to music while you write?

KENDRA NORMAN-BELLAMY: Oh yes! I don’t necessarily have to have it, but given a choice, I would elect to have music playing while I write. It’s really the only “noise” that I can appreciate when I’m in that creative mode. If I can’t have music, I’d rather have complete silence. Most often, I’m listening to Praise 102.5, which is the premiere gospel station in Atlanta. It gives me a good mix of music. When I’m not listening to the radio station, I pop in a CD and listen to my favorite gospel, jazz, or R&B artists. No matter what genre of music I’m listening to, the lyrics are positive and inspirational in nature.

TIA MCCOLLORS: Not all of the time because I end up doing more singing than writing. And just so you know, singing is NOT my forte. But I’ve found that I tend to write to the pace of the music – if it’s a slow kind of ballad CD, then I write slow. If it’s faster, like praise music, my fingers are running across that keyboard like it’s a piano. But when I do listen to music when writing, I enjoy Donald Lawrence, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Fred Hammond or Israel Houghton.

SHEWANDA RILEY: I have playlist of all instrumental piano music (Mel Tunney, Jacci Copeland) that I listen to when I’m writing.
