New Jersey Legalizes Sports Betting
Legalizing sports betting has been a long road for many states, but now the state of Rhode Island is on the right track. The Rivers Casino recently opened the state’s first legal sportsbook in Schenectady, New York, just six years after the law was passed. The law allows sportsbooks to open on-site at four casinos in upstate New York. This is a big step forward for the gambling industry, and the new state regulations will help make it easier to do business.
Although the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 allowed for betting on horse and greyhound races, there are some states that prohibit betting. In the state of Montana, however, sportsbooks are legal, and greyhound racing has been around since the late 1970s. This was the result of lobbying by casino powerhouses and others, which helped secure “head starts” over online-only operators. As a result, the industry has exploded in the state.
Regardless of the state where you live, the New York Gaming Commission will have the final say on Jay-Z’s application, which was submitted to the NYGA in November.
